The Jakarta Post Jakarta / Thu, September10, 2020 / 05:34 pm Eight people in Gresik regency, East Java, were ordered by local authorities to dig graves for those who have died of COVID-19 as punishment for not wearing face masks in public. Cerme district head, Suyono, said that he punished residents who did not wear face masks by making them dig graves at a public cemetery in Ngabetan village.

"There are only three available gravediggers at the moment, so i thought i might as well put these people to work with them," said Suyono as quoted by tribunnews.com on Wednesday, adding that local authorities made sure the health protocol violators did not participate in the burials. To assist the gravediggers, Suyono assigned two people to each grave. One is tasked with digging the grave, while the other lays wooden boards inside the hole to support the corpse. "Hopefully this can create a deterrent effect against violations," Suyono said.

He also said the number of COVID-19 cases was continuing to increase in Cerme, prompting the village administration to strengthen protocols in the village. Based on the Regent Law No. 22/2020, resident who violate the protocols are subject to fines or community service as punishment. Separately, Cerme Police chief Adj. Pol. Comm. Moh. Nur Amin said the police would cooperate with the military to enforce the protocols, such as by dispering public gatherings. 2.175 MAHASISWA TERIMA BEASISWA PENDIDIKAN INDONESIA, INI PESAN NADIEM

JAKARTA - A total of 2,175 people received the Indonesian Education Scholarship (BPI) from the Ministry of Education and Technology in the odd semester of the 2021/2022 academic year. BPI is a degree scholarship program for S1, S2, S3 as well as double degree programs.

BPI is given by the Ministry of Education and Culture through the Education Financing Service Center (Puslapdik) to improve and build Indonesian human resources and increase the usefulness of national education development funds.

Scholarship recipients consist of prospective teachers, teachers, prospective lecturers, lecturers, cultural actors, students, and outstanding students. They will attend education at 59 universities in the country and 112 universities abroad spread over 20 countries.

Mendikbudristek Nadiem Anwar Makarim advised that they really take advantage of this opportunity to take an adventure in studying. Kemendikbudristek also plans to increase the quota of scholarships for teachers, lecturers, and cultural actors.

“This is our effort to improve the quality of education and cultural actors, so don't waste it. Build a new network, get out of your comfort zone, try new things, don't be afraid to take risks, and make innovative efforts in learning," he said through a press release, Monday (4/10/2021).

He hopes that the Indonesian Education Scholarship can be a motivation for its recipients to become leaders in their respective sectors and support the Free Learning movement which was initiated by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

“Slowly the Free Learning movement is progressing and gaining momentum. So without change leaders, there will be no Freedom of Learning. Freedom to Learn is a movement. All who receive this scholarship will become agents of change. So optimize and contribute to the community when you return later," he said.

To the BPI recipient teacher educators, the Minister of Education and Technology said that they would become leaders in their respective sectors, either formally through Teacher Activators, becoming school principals, becoming teacher supervisors, or becoming part of the Ministry of Education and Culture.

In the opening of the briefing for BPI recipients, the Minister of Education and Technology also took the time to discuss with several scholarship recipients, one of whom was Sry Mulia Kurniati, a vocational teacher who received a Domestic Teacher Scholarship. The Minister of Education and Technology asked about his plans when he returned to teaching after studying with BPI.

Sry Mulia, who teaches at a State Vocational High School in Palembang majoring in tourism, answered that at this time she saw that there was no synchronization between the existing curriculum and the needs of students in the industrial world. "My goal is to form a teaching material or learning syllabus that is in sync with the students' majors," he said.

Responding to Sry Mulia, the Minister of Education and Technology hopes that Sry Mulia can redesign the tourism department of the vocational school curriculum when she returns to teaching.

“Hopefully at that time there will be independence from all our Merdeka Learning programs to be able to move. The key to this graduation is to be a mover, so one example is the Motivator Teacher. I hope that Motivating Teachers can enter leadership positions in the education sector,” he said.

Primus Bere Boe, the recipient of the Domestic Culture Actors scholarship who is pursuing a Masters degree at the Jogjakarta Art Institute (ISI) is also happy to have the opportunity to study for a Masters degree. According to him, the presence of cultural actors is very important, especially in border areas where it is urgently needed to promote culture.

"My home area is in the border area between Indonesia and Timor Leste where cultural enhancement is very much needed, so that it can create a sense of nationalism," said Primus.

Meanwhile, Vita Silvana, recipient of the Overseas Lecturer Scholarship for the doctoral level, said that ensuring the quality and quality of education is very important.

Vita, who is a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Indonesia, said that in the Tridarma of Higher Education, research and international collaboration are very important to maintain the quality of higher education.
